Despite the well-known connection between fitness and lifelong health – especially as we age – the research shows that today’s adults are moving less, not more. An estimated 40% of Americans over the age of 75 are entirely inactive – and just 20% of all adults meet the recommended guidelines for physical activity.
But at The Mayflower, residents like Sam Frazee are leading the charge in the opposite direction. A lifelong fitness enthusiast and former high school cheerleader, Sam has always enjoyed hobbies that keep her active – and since moving to Bristol Landing with her husband Rick last year, she’s expanded her usual exercise routine with a host of new offerings at the Fitness Center.
“On Monday, there’s posture and balance. Wednesday morning, weight training. Yin yoga on Friday,” she says. “Every single day, I make it a priority to go to a class or head down to the Fitness Center. Until I’ve done some stretching and gotten moving, I just don’t feel right – my whole body is a little off.”
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, as little as 150 minutes of physical activity every week can significantly improve overall health – lowering the risk of hypertension, cancer, diabetes, and dementia; boosting cognitive and emotional health; and adding years to life.
When Sam’s not stepping it up at exercise class, she still finds plenty of ways to stay active – like going for walks with Toby, the family’s 7-year-old Giant Schnauzer and retired therapy dog. Toby’s favorite way to start the day is with a run around scenic Bridges Lake, and The Mayflower’s campus has earned his enthusiastic “bark” of approval.
“There are so many beautiful outdoor spaces where you can enjoy nature,” Sam adds. “Especially right now, as all the birds are coming back for the fall – we have wood storks, kingfishers, spoonbills, all kinds. It’s just perfect.”
Of course, wellness doesn’t end with physical fitness. Sam is a big believer in the importance of staying socially and intellectually active, and she says The Mayflower makes it easy to do both. “There are so many classes and activities,” she says. “We used to go out maybe once a week, but here, we’re at the Winslow, the Grille, or Cru Quarters almost every evening. Everyone knows each other, and it feels like you’re surrounded by family.”
