Wellness and Fitness Tips from Elyse
"Inactivity causes people to rust out before they wear out," says The Mayflower's full-time Wellness Coordinator Elyse J. Baclar. Elyse, who has her Master's Degree in exercise physiology, offers the following health-related tips:
- Aerobic exercise may beat the blues. Researchers at Berlin's Free University have found that 30 minutes a day on the treadmill can relieve severe depression quicker than many drugs — and could provide an alternative treatment.
- Diabetics can help themselves. Exercising can improve insulin sensitivity and enhance metabolic control. It can also help manage or reverse complications, or slow down their development.
- When you see a doctor, be sure to mention the symptom that bothers you the most first. Studies show that most patients go to the doctor with several problems — and that they tend to mention the symptom that concerns them the most, last — often when the doctor is ready to leave the exam room.
