Nutrition Tips from Leigh Ann
If it's true that "you are what you eat," a varied and balanced diet is vital to health and well-being. Consider these tips from The Mayflower dietary and nutrition team:
- Don’t be afraid of trying different grain products. Quinoa, brown rice, whole wheat pasta and barley are just some of the wonderful grains that are available. There are many health benefits to eating a high fiber diet.
- It’s important to be aware of the saturated fat, trans fats and cholesterol in the foods you eat. Some fats are necessary in our diets. They help promote absorption of fat-soluble vitamins and supply our bodies with essential fatty acids. Stick with monounsaturated fats (olive oil, canola oil, etc.) and polyunsaturated fats (safflower oil) to help control your cholesterol levels.
- Add plenty of vegetables and fruit to your diet. They are generally low in fat and very filling. Fruits and vegetables are packed with vitamins and nutrients that your body needs.
- Balance the food you eat with physical activity. As we age, we tend to slowly gain weight. Walking, swimming and attending exercise classes are all wonderful ways to keep moving
(pending your doctor’s approval).
