Wellness and Fitness Tips from Elyse
With 22 exercise classes offered each week, The Mayflower’s fitness program provides opportunities to suit all levels of physical ability. From traditional weight training and pool exercises to line dancing and tai chi, there are plenty of ways for residents to develop whole-body wellness and stay “forever fit.” Here are some tips from Elyse Baclar, The Mayflower’s Wellness Coordinator:
- Find one or two exercises you enjoy and make them part of your daily routine, but make minor adjustments to keep the workouts interesting. For example, if you normally exercise inside, head outdoors for some fresh air and a change of scenery.
- Stay in shape with a complete workout program that includes cardiovascular, strength training and flexibility exercises. Together, these movements strengthen the heart and lungs, build musculoskeletal health and improve range of motion.
- Work out with a partner and encourage each other. Your friend should complement you in different ways, have similar fitness goals and provide that extra nudge and motivation you need to do your best. Plus, scheduling workouts together keeps you accountable, which means you’re less likely to
skip a workout. - Listen to music, if you’re exercising indoors. Whether you’re running, walking or lifting weights, music provides a subtle distraction that helps clear the mind – allowing you to focus on a stronger, harder workout performance. Studies show that music reduces shortness of breath and can even enhance the physical endurance of those with chronic lung disease.
